GB Development Squad member and young climber
Thank you to Sarah for letting us interview her at the 2019 Open Youth Lead Championships at The Big Depot, Leeds.
Who you are and what do you do?
My name is Sarah Walker-Palin and I’m in the British National Climbing Team
What was your first climbing experience?
It probably isn’t actually climbing but when my brother was quite young he went to a climbing wall and had a party there, so that was the first time I went to a climbing wall. But the first time I climbed was when there were these little tester walls in the Cotswolds and I kept getting stuck at the top. My parents got fed up and they decided to take me to a climbing wall.
How did you know that climbing was your thing?
I just loved it. I mean I didn’t want to do anything else I just loved climbing.
Where is your favourite outdoor climb?
Probably at Horseshoe Quarry in the Peak District. There’s this 35m climb called Men At Work and it was just so fun because it kept going on and on.
What has been your proudest climbing moment?
Probably getting into the British National Climbing Squad for the first time.
What are your ambitions?
I would like to be an inspiration to other people and just keep on climbing.
Lead, Speed or Boulder and Why?
Can I choose 2? I’m going to say bouldering and leading. Speed I’m really annoyed with at the moment because I whacked my knee twice when speed climbing, in the same place as well, so ouch! Bouldering is getting better and I like that I can improve quicker than in leading because I’m not that good a boulderer but I’m good at leading so I probably enjoy bouldering a little bit more than leading. Leading takes a long time.
What are your most liked and hated healthy foods?
That’s a hard question actually . I quite like sweet potato fries with cheese on top which are very delicious. Even if they do get your fingers very greasy they’re extremely delicious. Most hated … I don’t know probably carrots and celery even though I eat them, I hate them.
If not climbing, what sport would you be doing?
I have no idea. I actually have no idea. I do a few sports at school but I don’t enjoy them nearly as much as I like climbing.
Give us an inspiring quote (either yours or someone else’s).
“Keep on going”
